Bin Ziegler: If you can borrow a white wedding dress with very long trail, let one model stand and the other hold and lift the train of fabric, you press the shutter at the count of three, it will look very dramatic and elegant, you can see how it was done by viewing Jason Lanier's workshop on Youtube, I would do it if I have beautiful professional models as you do, but I forgot the name of that workshop, it is not hard to find on Youtube, Jason Lanier is so good at such things. I think Frank Doohef is good at it too.,

Christian Madsen: +Bin Ziegler I can't take credit for the dress, that was entirely the choice of the model, I could have gone with just the black background, but decided to have a blue-gel'ed flash just behind her head to give blue halo on the background, which worked wonderfully here, I have a few shots where it went completely bad too strong light or just didn't look right, which it fortunately did here.

G+ Notification System...

Is it just me or is the G+ notification system completely out of whack at the moment - one moment it says i have X new notifications and when I click the bell icon, no new notifications are there. And using a page identity I have just shared several posts with plus mentions of my primary account, and no notifications arrived - which I find very strange!

So I'm wondering if it is just me or it is more widespread...

Color Grading pt. 2

If you're not already using color grading it is definitely one of the most important if not the most important post processing skills you can learn. And although I am still a beginner in this field, I have already seen the potential and the improvement of my work, and it is my hope that you will do the same.

The image shown below is the image after going through my retouching steps (at the top) and the bottom image is after color grading including curve adjustments for contrasts. I consider curve adjustments to be a part of the whole color grading process, although perhaps the most simple part of the process.

This follow up is mostly to give you an example of the difference color grading can do to your work, and is not selected to be the best or most striking example, just my latest example of color grading done.

Heiko Köster: I'm not familiar with color grading, but the effect I see looks similar to changing the white balance during raw processing. Is this comparable ?

Heiko Köster: ... I looked it up, now. It's similar to changing the white balance. In your image it's working good, because you worked with natural light, didn't you ?

This can get very tricky when you have mixed light situations with natural and artificial lights, because when you adjust to either one of them, the other one looks weird.

Heiko Köster: Flash and daylight are compatible, like you said. When it comes to tungsten or neon lighting it's getting interesting, you can gel your flash to match one of them , but the sun is too big to gel ;) But then applying color grading to different sections of the image comes in handy. Unfortunately my software does not support to apply white balance to sections of an image. But curves and coloring can be applied selectively. I should try this more often.

Christian Madsen: +Jamie Rich definitely, I had a bit of conundrum for this image, I wanted to show the intricate details of the bumblebee, but found that by doing so I would cut a lot of the context out of the image not to speak of ruining the composition that I like... So the solution was to upload in high resolution so that people can zoom in and see the details and zoom out to see the context and composition ;))

I couldn't understand in the beginning that borjoir (I don't know the correct spelling) photography is not vulgar and pnorgraphy, now I do. Personally, I have no interest to pursue my photography in that direction, but now I view it as an art form. I agree with you completely that we should treat it in a mature way, if people like myself who is not interested, just leave it alone, there is no place for me to criticize. But I strongly believe there is not place at Google+, Facebook or any social media for those who try to extort the situation and making any vulgar suggestions, it is a great insult to the professional artists, I'm surprised Google+ filter didn't even block dirty comments like that.

Christian Madsen: +Budi Santosa thank you kindly, I almost never use the camera on my smartphone as it frustrates the hell out of me, by being slow to focus, and basically takes over the whole process, leaving me with unsharp, blurred, over- or underexposed photos which are generally too sharpened and low resolution, so I stick to my trusty DSLR instead... And as for people, rarely do I encounter anybody giving me trouble for taking their picture!

Christian Madsen: +Nach Nach I don't use the built-in flash, but several external flashes, and have them in manual setting. I wanted an aperture of f5.6 (reasonable depth of field, and sweet spot of used lens) and the power of the flashes at max. 1/16th power, which left me with only ISO to manipulate. And ISO 200 is not that high of an ISO only one stop from the base ISO of 100. At 1/16th power I can shoot in rapid succession without waiting for the flash to recharge, whereas at 1/8th power I would only be able to get a few shots before having to wait 1-2 seconds between shots for the flash to recharge.
And as always it is a matter of compromize, I could have set the aperture to f4 and ISO to 100 but f4 would not give me adequate depth of field and 1/8th power as described would result in unacceptable delays between shoots. So there you have the full story!

Color Grading pt 3

I decided to do a bit of extreme color grading in the style of the prevalent orange/teal color grading, popular with many Hollywood productions. The top image is the image I published here in May 2016, and the bottom one is the same image color graded as well as subjected to my smooth/local-contrast procedure. I'm not sure I will keep the color grading this extreme for the new re-edit of this photo, but it serves well to show the power of color grading.

The color grading itself was made in GIMP with the color grading plugin (http://registry.gimp.org/node/26187) as well as using curves adjustments and the hue-saturation tool.

Color Grading

One of the most difficult tools to learn and master in photographic post processing is color grading as it is not just one tool or technique, but a whole lot of tools and techniques and is not just a set of sliders and presets includings LUTs (Look Up Tables) although all of these elements can be important tools in the Color Grading Process.

Color Grading originated (as far as I know) in the video and movie industry, and one of the most (in)famous examples are the notorious "Orange and Teal" color toning - However, it has soon spread to stills photography as well, and with good reason, as it is a set of techniques that can take your images to the next level literally, when done right! So this is not a tutorial on how to do color grading, I am not yet qualified to make such a tutorial as I am still learning the basic stuff and the way you want to approach color grading is very personal and subjective as a matter of taste. But I can say as much as the fundamental concepts are a bit of color theory, knowledge of complementary colors, and selections of grades of color contrasts between shadows, midtones and highlight and applying them in a way that is aesthetically pleasing to the viewer.

Now having said all of this and if you bothered to read this far down in this TL;DR post... My question to you is do you use color grading consciously on your posts? And do you think of color contrasts consciously and apart from contrasts between shadows and highlights?

The image below I color graded with the intention of making it have a cinematic look and feel and with variant of the orange and teal (more like deep blue and orange-yellow toning).

Final words and thoughts for now is not to be afraid of color grading, but start to explore the concept and start to read about it, look for tutorials and read about color theory and start using your knowledge in your post processing, believe me you will be happy once you get started (if you haven't already). And don't rely on simple solutions for color grading, there aren't any it is all about using all of the available tools, your knowledge of colors and your imagination and creativity...

Christian Madsen: +Jamie Rich it is more than emphasis/deemphasis on certain colors - perhaps the best way to explain it would be to have 3 pieces of clear film placed over the image, one for shadows, one for mid-tones and one for highlights. On each sheet of film you paint with a translucent color but only on the areas for that sheet of film, so say you paint deep blue on the shadow areas, orange on the mid-tones and leave the highlights alone, then when you watch the image through these sheets of film, you see that the shadows have gotten a bluish tint and the mid-tones an orange tint, and you can adjust the intensity of the color grading by adding more or less color to the sheets of film. That is the way I'm visualizing the effects of color grading, you're adding a tint to the specific regions of the image, and yes in some cases emphasize or deemphasize existing colors or creating new ones!

Blast from the Past (2008)

Early street portraiture with my then super-zoom camera (Nikon CoolPix P80), this was about the time I got into street photography and street portraiture. It was fun finding this and other photos from that time and see how things have changed from then to now, with more experience and better equipment - so I decided to take the original JPEG that was rather flat and give it my current post processing treatment as well as some cinematic color grading to make it pop colorwise...

JPEG Rescue...

Came across this almost 10 year old hopelessly underexposed photo from a ferry trip between Germany and Denmark in the sunset. Unfortunately I didn't shoot RAW back then only JPEG and I wasn't very good with post processing back then, so I shamefully hid this image deep in the archives... Until today, when I happened to look at it again and thought perhaps I could do something about this image to make it usable. It is still not a very great picture, but I managed to make it usable by correcting the exposure, quite a few curve adjustments for contrasts and color adjustments, as well as selectively color grading the sea and the sky...

Portrait Photo Workflow

My first attempt of making a tutorial/walk-through of my workflow of a portrait photo, from RAW to ready to be saved in whatever format you wish. In this video I am only using open source programs, all of which (except Gwenview) runs on Linux, MacOS (OS X) and Windows and can be downloaded and used free of charge.
Programs used (in order of appearance):
~ Gwenview - Image Viewer (Linux only).
~ RawTherapee - RAW photo processor.
~ GIMP - Image Editor

As this is my first attempt of doing this kind of videos, I will very much appreciate feedback if you like or dislike this kind of videos.

Bin Ziegler: Excellent tutorial, I will try to download Gwenview program too.

Christian Madsen: +Bin Ziegler thank you I hope the sound wasn't too low, I had some problems with that as I was using the built in microphone on my laptop, next time I will use a separate microphone.

I like gwenview, as it can show almost all image formats including RAW formats as well as XCF files (GIMPs file format) but different people different taste, this just happens to be the one I like the best ;))
